Arnulfo Leguizamo is who every cafetero in Colombia should aspire to be: As a member of Asociación Los Naranjos, he is a leader in his community and supports his fellow farmers in their efforts to improve their quality. In 2011, he won the first price at the Cup of Excellence with coffee from this farm. An unprecedented price of $45/lb was paid for the Cup of Excellence–winning coffee. He continues to be a hard-working, approachable, and generous producer, and an inspiration to others—including his son Diego, who has started managing the family farms alongside his father. Diego has trained up as a cupper and seeks to be in charge of operations in the future, a multigenerational coffee family.
We first heard about Arnulfo Leguizamo about 4 years ago when tasting through samples from Los Naranjos Cooperative. The cooperative from Colombia was putting out stunning lots of affordable coffees but we kept hearing about one farm and producer in particular and that Finca Primavera by Arnulfo Leguizamo. It is a single varietal, Caturra, grown at about 1840 meters above sea level and is fully washed.
The first time we cupped this coffee, we was stunned by the complexities, the brightness, the depth of body and the fragrances. It reminded us of a Kenyan coffee, an Ethiopian coffee, and a Colombian coffee all in the same cup.
This year the coffees reminds us of a cherry cola. It is crisp and sweet. When brewed as espresso you can pull out some more citric flavors like lime and grapefruit. The aromatics remind us of drinking a hot chocolate in garden of roses. Floral and deep. This coffee never disappoints.
